DIY Flash Bouncer

I wanted a flash bouncer like the Sigma Bounce Reflector, but after looking around a bit I wanted to make one my self. Just for fun.

Primary goal: Useful
Secondard goal: Not look like an idiot.

Design goal: No gluing stuff to my flash!

First attempt: First I tried this HackPhoto.com paper diffuser, which actually worked quite well, if I ever find my self with a piece of paper and a rubber band, but short of a bounce I'll make this one. Easy and fast. But probably will not last for long.

Second attempt: Using the templates and ideas from Chuck Gardner (and abit of Matt Greers page), I build the one you can see in this gallery.

I got the foam from the local hobby store (Panduros Hobby (danish store), at 20dkkr for each A3 sheet). I got two sheets and glued them with 3M Spray Mount glue. I already had the self sticking velcro.

I did change the design a bit: I made it a bit shorter then a full A4, I cut the top corners to make the sides align when folded and I made the fastening mechanism of one long piece on one side, to make it wrap all the way around the flash head (only possible because I had an A3 size sheet).

I made several paper prototype and as you can see from the last one I actually cut that one up a few times and glued extra pieces of paper on to it.

I've added measurements to the last prototype - I know it's not exactly easy to read. Sorry. Just make one and see if it fits your flash. And remember that the foam is 4-5mm thick and will need to a bit bigger than the paper.

Hint: I used a scalpel to cut the foam. Unfortunately it was a bit dull, and some of the edges became a bit rough. Using scissors will give a nicer edge, but is less accurate.

Hint 2: Sticking the paper prototype to the foam sheet with tape, makes everything easier. Except when you have to cut through the tape. Be careful, and cut once lightly just to get through the tape without having it get into the foam. Then cut the foam. I wish I had practiced this bit before I started...
